Phenomenology of Light
and Rhythms of the Earth

Edition #2 (2025)

By Zen Teh & SueKi Yee

Exhibition venue: Objectifs Singapore, a commission project by the Singapore Art Week (SAW 2025)

Phenomenology of Light and Rhythms of the Earth is an ongoing collaborative research project, first started by Zen Teh, as part of her residency exhibition “Swallowed by darkness” in Künstlerhaus Bethanien. Zen collaborated with Malaysian dancer-choreographer SueKi Yee who had participated in the workshop and subsequently created a performance specific to her immersive exhibition. Together, the exhibition and performance at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien displayed the synergistic potential of the different art forms and media.

In the 2nd edition of this project, Zen and SueKi as collaborators continued the research into Singapore’s urban context, delving deeper into how they can explore the phenomenology of light and rhythms of the earth through multidisciplinary means: soundscapes, multimedia data translation, movement, and tactile forms. Public workshops focusing on eliciting embodied experiences and critical reflection on light and darkness in urban spaces underpins the art making process in the 4 cities (Singapore, Phnom Penh, Bangkok and Berlin). Their research and collaborative process extends further to include both pre-exhibition workshop (embodiment of light) and exhibition movement workshop where the public will be able to contribute to the artists’ art making process as well as interact with the exhibits in meaningful ways.

This provides multiple entry points into the research as well as the interpretation, creation, and presentation of the data. Through artistic means, they’re interested in opening up a space where people can take time to process and discuss their embodied perspectives on light and darkness, and how these ever co-existing elements are inextricably linked to life rhythms, memories, pollution, urban development, safety and surveillance, environmental changes, accessibility of energy, and volatile global political states.
